Youth Odyssey’s definition of an at-risk youth is a person who is susceptible to participate in activities that include drugs, alcohol, violence, gangs, premature sexual activities, and are economically stressed. In addition, at-risk includes youth who are victims of abuse, neglect, violence, and demonstrate delinquent and/or anti-social behavior. |
Youth Odyssey seeks to help youth help themselves through behavior change and the setting of goals for their future in a positive mindset. This is achieved through:
• Mentoring- through staff and adult volunteers leading by example with healthy lifestyles throughout Youth Odyssey programming sessions.
• Development of core life skills (leadership, self-confidence, problem-solving, teamwork, trust, and communication) – applied in every Youth Odyssey activity through adventure activities.
• Pro-social peer development – through all Youth Odyssey activities especially the Ropes Course and Adventure Wilderness Trips where youth work together in team building activities |

Youth Odyssey programs promote the
personal
growth
of at-risk teens by fostering
leadership skills,
self-confidence, problem-solving
skills, communication
skills, teamwork, and trust.
Everyday our youth face challenges that depend on
adequate basic life skills.
The ability to set and achieve goals,
cope with and defeat, communicate, make decisions, and solve
problems. Through Youth Odyssey’s challenge programs, such as
rock climbing or kayaking, we give them opportunities to develop these
relevant life skills. Their feelings of inadequacy and despair are redirected
into hope, vision, resiliency, and a measure of positive self-esteem. |

In the words of noted resilience researcher Dr. Emmy Werner, “Protective buffers (life skills)…appear to make a more profound impact on the life course of individuals who grow up and overcome adversity than do specific risk factors.” (1996)
Youth Odyssey annually brings 500 of Nueces County community’s boys and girls between 11 and 17 into adventurous, exciting outdoor challenge activities at zero cost to these young people and their families. |
